Patagonia - Leading by Example

Updated: Jun 5, 2023

Some advocate that a company’s only responsibility is to generate profits for shareholders. At Little Ocean Heroes, we believe that companies need to have a broader responsibility to society and the environment.

The popular outdoor apparel company, Patagonia is one of the best example of a successful brand that put people and the environment alongside their profit from the start and we should celebrate purpose-led organization like Patagonia. Since 1985, Patagonia has given away the equivalent of 1% of its sales every year to environmental groups and relentlessly seek to reduce their environmental footprint by investing in organic agriculture and in circular economy by using recycled fabrics and repairing and re-selling used clothing. Recently Patagonia changed their mission to « We’re in business to save our home planet. »

As reported by The New York Times, yesterday, Patagonia's founder Yvon Chouinard and his family once again showed us the way and made the decision to give away their Patagonia equity to a charitable entity to fund environmental conservation. Go visit Patagonia's website to read Mr Chouinard's letter "Earth is now our only shareholder".

We want to celebrate and congratulate Patagonia’s leadership and hope it will inspire positive change.
